Science Fair - Room 7
The Solar System, Planets, Rocket Ships, Matariki and Refraction of Light
Welcome to our creative and inspirational display of Science learning, discovery, fascination and adventure from Room 7.
An investigation and experiment starts with an observation! As enthusiastic and focussed learners we have been researching the solar system, names and characteristics of various planets. The boys and girls also had a lot of fun creatining fluorescent and pastel rocket ships, decorated with glitter and Matariki stars!
Our class talked about what it is like to spend time in space?
The challenges?
Effects on your body and the necessary adjustments when you return to earth?
To enhance our rich cultural heritage - Room 7 studied and embraced the annual celebration of Matariki: The Maori name for the cluster of 7 stars known as Pleiades. Matariki literally means 'eyes of god' or 'little eyes'. It signifies the start of the Maori New Year - respecting traditions and the importance of family, honouring the past, accepting the present and looking towards the future to enhance change, positivity and goodwill.
We conducted an experiment on the properties of water and refraction of light. It was fascinating to observe how light changes its direction when it travels from air to water. When submerged in water the ruler, pencil and straw looked bent as there is a difference in density between the two mediums. Water is heavier than air because it is denser.
We see what is in front of us because the light enters our eyes. Our brain tells our eyes what objects are in front of us.
Please enjoy our bright and expressive visual graphics and innovative artistic images.
When you are next visiting Room 7 we would love you to read our reflections, insights and scientific observations.
